DANCE TEACHER

Stories you may like

Dance instructors are responsible for demonstrating and explaining dance methods and techniques with musical or rhythmic accompaniment for students of all ages and skill levels. Dance instructors may instruct multiple forms of dance, or focus on a primary form.

Over time, dances have become highly complex and specialised, often taking years of training in order to reach an intermediate level; other times they are simple and to be enjoyed as part of a group celebration.

We rely on dance teachers to show us the steps and begin to bring out the potential in our bodies. With a greater emphasis on personal development and more leisure time than ever before, more and more people are turning to dance classes as a means of keeping fit, meeting new people and discovering more about themselves.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

There's no single educational track for becoming a dance teacher, and the education you'll need is partially dependent upon where you want to work. Small, private dance studios often establish their own requirements for dance teachers, and sometimes they only mandate that a teacher has lots of dance experience. Dance teachers working in the school system, however, generally need at least a bachelor's degree. Before you choose your educational path, you'll need to decide how, where and to whom you want to teach dance.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

For a successful career a dance teacher must possess the following personal attributes:

  • Excellent ability in their personal area of expertise.
  • Excellent anatomical knowledge.
  • Patience and an ability to communicate movement to people of all abilities.
  • Ability to keep control over a large class of people.
  • Friendly and sincere, good at networking.
  • Good organisational skills, if self-employed.

JOB MARKET

Some dancers choose to train in areas related to dance in order to help boost their income and to develop a portfolio or second career. Popular areas include:

  • dance teaching;
  • choreography;
  • notation;
  • community theatre work;
  • dance administration.

Some dancers undertake further training to work in complementary therapies or to lead fitness classes such as yoga, pilates and the Alexander Technique. Another option is to become a personal trainer.

Employment of dancers and choreographers is projected to grow 5 percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as the average for all occupations. A growing interest in dance and in pop culture may provide opportunities in dance schools and in fields outside of dance companies. However, dancers and choreographers face intense competition, and the number of applicants is expected to vastly exceed the number of job openings.
