College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET)

Stories you may like

College of Engineering, Trivandrum (CET), is the first engineering college in Kerala, situated in Chavadimukku near sreekariyam, 13 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. Founded in 1939 during the reign of the Travancore King, Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma. The college was ranked 47 in Outlook Magazine's list of Top 100 Engineering Colleges in India 2016.

In 1990, the Department of Science and Technology, government of India, ranked the college as one among the high ranking institutions in comparison with the performance of National Institute of Technology(NITs) in the area of training and placement. It is one of the few technical institutions in South India, which admits students mostly on a merit basis through an All Kerala Engineering Entrance Examination. Admission to this institution requires good ranks in this examination. Besides the regular B.Tech, B.Arch, M.Tech, M.Plan and MCA programmes, the college also conducts Part Time B.Tech and M.Tech classes for meritorious Diploma Holders. There is Lateral Entry Scheme to admit meritorious Diploma holders to the Second Year/Third Semester of the B.Tech courses to acquire a Degree in Engineering based on a State level entrance examination.

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research IISER, Thiruvananthapuram functions from the campus. The college also extends lab facilities to the students of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram. There is a proposal to convert CET to a Centre of Excellence, upgrading it to a 'Kerala Institute of Technology(KIT)'. Then a Technical University can grow around it.  The college has a student community which runs technical and cultural inter-collegiate festivals. There are several unusual aspects at CET, including a lingo of its own and customs such as 'Demo Week', where final year students dress up according to themes.

Facilities

The college began on 3 July 1939 as a part of the erstwhile University of Travancore, Kerala, India. The college campus is situated in Chavadimukku near Sreekariyam, 13 km from Thiruvananthapuram Central (railway station). Extending over 125 acres (500,000 m²) of land, it has one of the most spacious campuses in the country.
The main building resembles a spanner from the air, around which are spread the departmental buildings, library block, laboratories, workshops, hostels, a planetarium, staff quarters, and stadiums. The campus is one of the greenest in the country, and has won accolades from environmentalists and nature enthusiasts alike.

According to a study sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, government of India, in the early ninties, College of Engineering, Trivandrum was among the top ten Engineering Colleges in India. The College ranks among the top in the country in the quality of its graduates and the number of top jobs held by its graduates. With such an eminence in the academic and curricular activities, the College is the most sought after Engineering College by the applicants of Engineering degree programmes in the state.

Bosch Rexroth-CET Center of Excellence in Automation Technologies

The Bosch Rexroth-CET Center of Excellence in Automation Technologies is a joint initiative of Bosch Rexroth, Germany and Government of Kerala for imparting hands on training with latest components used in the area of industrial automation such as hydraulic drives, pneumatic drives, proportional hydraulics, sensors, PLCs, mechatronics, robotics, motion logic controllers etc.

The primary objective of the centre is to bridge the gap between the Industries and the Academics. Centre caters to the needs of Polytechnics, Vocational Institutes, Engineering Institutes and Industries in the field of automation technology. The centre has dedicated faculty from College of Engineering Trivandrum, trained by Bosch Rexroth.

Hostel

The college has both men’s hostel and Women’s hostels. Men’s hostel is situated behind the college within the campus amidst a glistening panoramic view. The Women’s hostel is located on the front side of the college at a beautiful location amidst greenish scenery. Both hostels provide comfortable and conducive atmosphere to develop the innate abilities of inmates. Indoor and outdoor facilities for sports and cultural activities (Reading rooms, Fitness centers with modern scientific equipments) are available in both hostels.

The men’s hostel has 250 rooms and can accommodate 500 students. The ladies hostel has 140 rooms which can accommodate 400 students. Both hostels are under the control of the Warden, assisted by two assistant wardens and Resident Tutors(RTs).

The mess is run by the mess committee elected from among the students under the directions of the General Secretary, Mess Director and other members of the committee. A hygienic atmosphere is available in the hostels. The Resident tutors (RTs) look after the hostels and maintain a peaceful atmosphere in the hostels. Hostel day (MH day and LH day) festivities are conducted in both hostels with the active participation of inmates and faculty of the college. Dr. P.G. Jairaj (Professor in Civil Engineering) is the Warden.
