Electricians play a critical role in building development and maintenance. They install and maintain electrical power systems, communication tools, and wiring in residences and businesses. While electrician is generally regarded as an admirable occupation, you have to weigh the pay and benefits against the dangerous attributes of the work.Electricians are responsible for testing, fitting and repairing wiring and circuits and installing new electrical infrastructures. An electrician is a tradesman responsible for the maintenance and installation of electrical wiring and related equipment. Electricians usually work in residential homes, public buildings or offices, ensuring that wires and circuits are safe, repairing faults in the electrics and installing new circuits after building work is complete.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Most electricians learn the job through an apprenticeship. Apprentices are required to have a high school diploma. Some start out by attending a technical school. Formal education is not mandatory; the skill is all that matters. All electricians should expect to maintain current knowledge of the National Electric Code throughout their careers.  Most states require electricians to pass a test and be licensed. Some people start their classroom training before seeking an apprenticeship. A number of public and private vocational-technical schools and training academies offer training to become an electrician. Employers often hire students who complete these programs and usually start them at a more advanced level than those without this training. A few people become electricians by first working as helpers—assisting electricians by setting up job sites, gathering materials, and doing other nonelectrical work—before entering an apprenticeship program. All apprentices need a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.). Electricians may also need classes in mathematics because they solve mathematical problems on the job.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Being an electrician is a technical and highly skilled job. As well as being hard working and committed to the job, electricians need to have:

  • Good practical skills
  • Confidence when using power tools
  • The ability to analyse technical drawings
  • Close attention to detail
  • The ability to focus for long periods of time
  • The ability to follow instructions
  • A methodical approach to work
  • Problem solving abilities
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the electricity industry
  • A commitment to health and safety and a knowledge of specific electrical safety regulations
  • Good communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Some administrative skills – the job involves filling in paperwork for each different job
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a small team
  • Normal colour vision (this is crucial as electricians need to be able to distinguish between the different coloured wires in a circuit)
  • A reasonable standard of physical fitness

JOB MARKET

Compared with workers in all occupations, electricians had a higher percentage of workers. The BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) forecasts average growth in electrical positions over the 2008-2018 decade. As homes and businesses require more wiring, electricians will be needed to install the necessary components. Overall growth of the construction industry and the need to maintain older equipment in manufacturing plants also will require more electricians.

Alternative power generation, such as solar and wind, is an emerging field that should require more electricians for installation. Increasingly, electricians will be needed to link these alternative power sources to homes and power grids over the coming decade. Solar, wind and other alternative energy training is also increasingly available for those who want to specialize in "green" electrical jobs.

With greater efficiency and reliability of newer manufacturing plants, demand for electricians in manufacturing should increase as more electricians are needed to install and maintain systems.
