Government College of Engineering Karunagappally (CEK) is a public institute of engineering and technology in Karunagappally, in the north-west of Kollam district, Kerala, India. It has been approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and recognized by the Cochin University of Science And Technology (CUSAT) and APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU). Being located in Karunagappally, Kollam district, the college has got access to all means of transport, communication and lodging facilities. It is the second engineering college in Kollam district the fourth engineering college under the aegis of the state government's Institute of Human Resources Development in Electronics. The college was selected in 2012 to participate in Phase II of the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme, a project organised by the Government of India with assistance from the World Bank). The college was selected under component 1, sub-component 1.1 of the programme, for "strengthening institutions to improve learning outcomes and employability of graduates".
In 2011 a Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering was established. A postgraduate programme was commenced by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the same year. In 2012 a second postgraduate program in electronics and communication engineering commenced being offered. In 2015 the college became affiliated with the A P J Abdul Kalam Technological University.

Programs


College of Engineering Karunagappally (CEK) currently offers UG and PG Programmes. The College offers three B.Tech. courses in the streams of  Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), each with an intake of 60 regular students  per year. CEK offers three M.Tech. courses in Electronics and Communication (ECE) with specialization in Signal Processing, Computer Science with specialisation in image processing with an annual intake of 24 students per stream. The college is affiliated to the University of Kerala and APJ Abdul_Kalam Technological University follows its curricula and syllabi

Admissions

 

B.Tech Degree

College of Engineering Karunagappally offers the following full-time courses leading to the BTech Degree of the Cochin University of Science and Technology. Additional 10% students are allotted  in each branch for B.Tech Degree Course from Kerala Engineering Entrance examination Rank list as per the Govt. of Kerala orders (Tuition Fee Waiver scheme for women, economically backward and physically handicapped meritorious students.)
Lateral entry Admission to Second Year for Diploma holders - Additional 10% in Annual intake  (Govt.& Management Seats in each branch )


Academic Eligibility:

 
Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary Examination, Kerala, or Examinations recognized as equivalent thereto, with 50 % marks in Mathematics separately, and 50 % marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry/Bio-technology/Computer Science /Biology put together are eligible for admission.
Allotment to 85% seats of the annual intake is made by Commissioner for Entrance examination (CEE), Government of  Kerala from the rank list of Kerala Engineering Entrance examination conducted every year by Govt. of Kerala .For Details of Kerala Engineering Entrance examination and allotment see the website http://www.cee-kerala.org. 15%  seats are reserved for non resident Indians (NRI seats).
For NRI admission separate applications are invited by IHRD and rank list is prepared on the basis of qualifying examination and students are admitted from this ranklist.


M.Tech Degree

Admission shall normally be restricted to those who are included in the rank list published by DTE for MTech admission. However, this stipulation is relaxed in the case of Sponsored candidates. In case seats remain vacant due to lack of candidates from DTE rank list, candidates with valid GATE score will be considered. Even if seats are still remaining vacant, candidates without valid gate score will be considered for admission against such vacancies. For Sponsored candidates, minimum of 2 years Experience is required after acquiring a qualifying degree in a job where the minimum eligibility is the qualifying degree.


Eligibility

B.E/ B.Tech degree in Computer Science and Engineering/ Information Technology/ M.C.A degree/ five year Integrated M.Sc degree/ AMIETE / AMIE in Computer Science of a recognized University with a minimum of 60% marks or CGPA 6.5 in a 10 point scale.

 

Facilities

 

The college offers a wide range of activities to stimulate the innovative potential of students. In view of its outstanding performance in education, the college was granted an aid of Rupees 10 Crore by the MHRD under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP II). The institute campus is enabled with round the clock WiFi connection and also connected to the National Knowledge Network grid which enables collaborative research, development and innovation amongst NKN connected institutes facilitating advanced distance education in specialized fields of engineering. The college offers transportation facilities to nearby cities (Kollam and Kayamkulam) by institute bus. In addition hostel facilities are arranged for girls and boys.

 

Central Library

The college library has an excellent collection of books from various branch of engineering science & technology and also from humanities and science,  for the benefit of students and faculty members. The library receives regularly journals and newsletters from various organisations and professional bodies and provides students and faculty the latest information in technical education, research and developmental activities.
The library functions from 8.15 am – 6.00 pm on all working days and provides envious number of reference materials

Training and Placement

Training and Placement Cell is guided by a Placement and Training officer and is enriched by student members.  TPC prepares the students to face competitive examinations and interviews through intensive training programmes encompassing aptitude tests, group discussions, mock interviews and the basics of behavioural psychology & body language.  It assists students in career planning and also provides information on post-graduate courses. Under Industry Institute interaction various expert lecturers ,industrial tutoring, internship, industrial visits etc have been conducted. Former students of our institution are pursuing Ph.D at premier institutes like IIT's and NIT's. Major companies who have recruited from our college are WIPRO, IBS, L & T, Infosys, TCS, CTS, Accenture Technologies, Ernst & Young,  Shriram Transport Finance Company Ltd.


Alumni

The institution has a well established alumni association. All students of the college who have completed the course are de facto members of the association. Alumni are actively participating in all development activities of the institution.


 
Parent–Teacher Association

The college PTA provides support for the improvement in the infrastructure facilities and other activities towards the welfare of the students.  The Principal acts as the Patron of PTA. College canteen, hostel for girls and bus services are run by PTA. 


College Hostel

The institute has two hostels for girls, both are situated near to the college. They are managed by the hostel development committee. The mess is run on dividing system under the supervision of mess committee. Dr.Smitha P (Asst. Professor)  and Ms. Geetha S (Asst. Professor) are the hostel wardens. College bus is operated between college and hostel II on all working days.


Canteen

College canteen is functioning inside the campus managed by the Canteen Committee and takes ample care in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene.


ATM Counter

The institute provides an ATM counter within the campus for the staff and students to handle their financial transactions effortlessly.
 
Sports and Cultural Festivals

The college provides good infrastructure facilities for students to prove their mettle in sports and games. The students of the college has actively participated and succeeded in arts, sports and games at the inter collegiate & university levels. Students were also able to represent CUSAT in State level competitions.
