Blood bank nursing includes working with patients in various settings. It consists of collecting and labeling blood to be used in transfusions.

Blood bank nursing professionals are trained to draw blood from the body of a patient either through the process of vein puncture or by using finger sticks in case of little amount of blood.  The majority of jobs in this profession are in hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and medical offices.

A B.Voc degree in this discipline demands good analytical skills and the ability to work independently.  Those students who are interested in examining all phases of the blood bank operation, from donor as well as patient registration and successive handling of blood products can choose this profession.

 

Eligibility Criteria for B.Voc in Blood Bank Nursing

 

Students who have completed plus two are eligible to get admission in the B.Voc course.

Lateral Entries

  • Those who have qualified SSLC and completed one year of certificate course in Blood Bank Technician are eligible to get admission in the B.Voc course.

  • Students who have completed plus two and one year of certificate course in Blood Bank Technician are eligible to get direct admission to the second year of B. Voc course (3rd  semester)

 

Course Duration

 

  • Three years for those who enter into the course generally.

  • Candidates who completed BSS Diploma course are possible to get admission through lateral entry scheme (For further reference check Eligibility criteria section)

 

Roles and Responsibilities of Blood Bank Nurse

 

  • Assist with donor room preparations, prepare and distribute supplies and equipment, maintain drugs & consumables and equipment management.

  • Assist MO in donor selection.

  •  Provide information related to donor screening & post donation instructions to donors

  •  Perform phlebotomy (to take blood from the patients) & manage post donation care

  • Collect samples in pilot tubes, supervise transportation of pilot tubes & collected blood bags to the respective labs

  • Maintain documentation related to donor records

  •  Assist in apheresis procedure, donor eligibility and donor care

 

Required Job Skills

 

  • Have a strong desire for medical terminology, anatomy and physiology

  • Have an interest in blood drawing techniques, ethics, safety standards, first aid, CPR and infection control

  • Those who are willing to work at laboratories, clinics etc

  • Those who are willing to work for consistent hours, or schedules

  •  Community blood centers

  •  Private hospital blood banks

  • University-affiliated blood banks

  •  Transfusion services and independent laboratories

  • Nursing homes
