An event planner/event manager is someone who coordinates all aspects of professional meetings and events. They often choose meeting locations, arrange transportation, and coordinate other details. 

Events managers are responsible for every aspect of delivering the event, from deciding on a concept to planning logistical details and running the event on the day. They are responsible for the project management of corporate, social, fundraising, promotional and community events. They often specialise in one kind of event such as planning a wedding, fundraising events or conferences.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

There are no specific qualifications required for events managers, and they typically come from a wide range of educational backgrounds.  Employers will usually look for a number of skills which could translate from a wide range of qualifications including administration, marketing, budget management and organisation. 

But there are qualifcation requirements for corporate events. However for organizing corporate events a degree/diploma in event management, PR, tourism, hospitality management, business administration or marketing is a must. This is because corporate events are organized to promote and sell company's products or services or to build/enhance its brand image.

The role of an events manager is a highly demanding one requiring a wide range of skills. These include:

JOB MARKET

Event, meeting and convention planners could expect a very significant job growth of 10% from 2014-2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. 
To have the best chance of success in this field, event planners must possess exceptional oral and written communication skills, as well as excel at creating and maintaining good working relationships. Once their experience is established, planners may be in a position to work as consultants or open their own companies.

Events managers can work in-house for a large corporate, educational or public-sector organisation as part of the events team. Events managers are also employed by charities, hotels, conference venues or leisure facilities. Additionally, there are also a large number of specialist events management companies who work for a wide variety of clients. With experience, many events managers go on to set up their own business or work freelance which can be more lucrative, although it does rely on having a strong client base.

By being certified you can demonstrate competitive distinction, and that you have the knowledge, training, experience, judgment and ability to plan and manage a successful event. Event management companies and media houses are slowly but gradually recognizing the value of certified event professionals and in the near future they will be given priorities in event jobs.

ARE YOU FIT FOR THE JOB?

If you are not very social and flexible then event management is not for you. You must be ready to work/travel 24/7. There are no fixed working hours in this field. You may have to work 36 hours in one stretch. 

To prepare for a career as an event planner, it is essential to develop strong communication skills. Work experience as an administrative assistant or experience in marketing can also help develop skills that will be beneficial to an event planner. Completing a relevant degree or certificate program can also help get a job in this growing field.
