Patience: The great irony of social is that it happens so fast, but results accrue slowly. Your wins come when you acknowledge comments, respond quickly, offer help and support consistently over time. True social media professionals recognize the need to build and nurture relationships and allow connections to unfold slowly. A slow, deliberate and patient approach to social media is key if you are going to become proficient.
Many companies want their social media directors to have the same kind of educational background as their public relations, marketing and communications executives do. An undergraduate degree should suffice at most companies. Degrees in journalism, communications, marketing or public relations offer the qualifications you’ll need to show employers you understand how to communicate with a mass audience and how to target specific consumer niches.
You’ll boost your chances of landing a social media job if you pair your undergraduate degree with additional training in social media. Employers might want proof you understand the specific principles of social media in addition to general marketing and communications concepts. Several organizations and educational institutions host conferences, seminars and courses focusing on social media for business use.
