CONSTRUCTION SECTOR IN INDIA, THE SECOND LARGEST EMPLOYER, NEXT TO AGRICULTURE

The construction sector employs more than 35 million people in India. From 2013 to September 2015, the construction sector attracted the second highest FDI (foreign direct investment) equity inflow. According to India’s Government, the construction sector is valued at over $126 billion. About half of the demand comes from the infrastructure sector, and the rest is driven by the real estate sector and other industrial activities. The Planning Commission has estimated that investment requirement in infrastructure to the tune of about 14,500 billion or US$320 billion during the 11th Five Year Plan period.

Increasing investments in residential construction and transport infrastructure will drive growth in India’s construction industry over the forecast period (2016–2020), according to a study by Timetric’s Construction Intelligence Centre (CIC). Consequently, the average annual growth in real terms is expected to improve from of 2.95% in 2011–2015 to 5.65% during the coming five years.

In India Construction has accounted for around 40 per cent of the development investment during the past 50 years. Around 16 per cent of the nation's working population depends on construction for its livelihood. The Indian construction industry employs over 30 million people and creates assets worth over 200 billion.

Government efforts to improve India’s residential and transport infrastructure will also play a vital role in supporting the growth. With the present emphasis on creating physical infrastructure, massive investment is planned in this sector. 

The construction industry has contributed towards India’s GDP, both directly and indirectly. 

Construction Skill Development Council of India is promoted by Construction Federation of India (CFI), Builders' Association of India (BAI), National Highways Builders Federation (NHBF) and Confederation of Real Estate Developers 

Association of India (CREDAI). Mr. Ajit Gulabchand is the Chairman of the Governing Council of CSDCI having 15 Directors from construction sector. Mr. J. Ganguly is the CEO of CSDCI.
