Government Engineering College, Barton Hill was established by the Government of Kerala in the academic year 1999-2000. The institution is located in Barton Hill, which is two kilometres from the city centre in Trivandrum. Within a short span of twelve years since inception, the college has achieved notable academic excellence. The college is a listed to the University of Kerala. Programs


Government Engineering College Barton Hill currently offers UG and PG Programmes. The College offers five B.Tech. courses in the streams of Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), Information Technology (IT), Civil Engineering (CE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), each with an intake of 60 regular students and six lateral entry students per year.
GECB, Trivandrum offers three M.Tech. courses in Mechanical Engineering (ME) with specialization in Machine Design, Information Technology (IT)with specialization in Network Engineering and Electronics and Communication (ECE) with specialization in Signal Processing with an annual intake of 18 students per stream.
The college is affiliated to the University of Kerala and APJ Abdul_Kalam Technological University follows its curricula and syllabi

Admissions

 

Admission to all the seats are based on the Entrance Examination Conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Government of Kerala which ensures only meritorious students join the institution.

 

Eligibility for admission to B.Tech degree course

(a) A pass in the Higher Secondary Examination of the Department of Higher Secondary Education, Vocational Higher Secondary Examination of Department of Vocational Higher Secondary Education, Government of Kerala or examinations recognized equivalent thereto, with 50% marks in Mathematics separately and 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics put together are eligible for admission with relaxation for SC/ST/SEBC candidates.
 
(b) A diploma in engineering awarded by the Board of Technical examination, or an examination recognized equivalent thereto, by the State Board of Technical Education undergoing an institutional course of at least 3 years, securing a minimum of 50% marks in the final diploma examination.
 
(c) Applicants should have completed 17 years of age as on the 31 December. No relaxation of the minimum age will be allowed. There is no upper age limit.(d) In the case of nominees of Government of India, NRI candidates and nominees to the Reciprocal Quota seats, who are selected on the basis of marks in the qualifying examination, 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together (AICTE stipulation) are required. For Diploma holders 60% marks in the final Diploma examination is required. The relaxation of marks mentioned in clause below given to candidates belonging to SEBC, SC/ST is applicable here also.

 

Eligibility for admission to M.Tech degree course

Admission to all the seats are based on the GATE examinations, which ensures only meritorious students join the institution.

For admission to any of the M-Tech courses offered by the college Candidates should have undergone the B.Tech/B.E course in an institution approved by AICTE. Candidates should have a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in the engineering examination in the relevant subject. 

As per the AICTE norms, the annual intake of PG course is eighteen. Admission to the PG programme is done through the Centralised Admission Process by the Directorate of Technical Education. All the students need to pay the fees only at the Government rate.

 

Eligibility for admission to ADAM degree course

Admission to the course is through entrance test conducted at the college. Entrance test comprises of theory as well as practical tests. 

(a) Candidates who have a Degree/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering / Automobile Engineering / Electrical & Electronics Engineering / Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering / Mechatronics / Applied Electronics and equivalent disciplines. Final year B.Tech. students with 6.5 CGPA till seventh semester and without live back papers are also eligible.

(b) Candidates seeking admission can send downloaded and duly filled in application form. The form should accompany a Demand Draft of Rs 500/-(Rs. 250/- for SC/ST candidates) in the name of “Coordinator, ADAM, Government Engineering College, Barton Hill” drawn on any SBT branch and payable at Trivandrum. All such applications will be scrutinized and eligible candidates will be called for the entrance test. Result of the entrance test and list of finally selected candidates will be displayed on website within 10 days after entrance test.

 

 

Facilities

 

The campus, situated centrally in the city of Thiruvananthapuram, is less than a kilometre from Palayam, and is located beside the Government Law College, Trivandrum. A hostel is provided for ladies. The campus area is about 6 acres. The college is housed in the old seven storey buildings. The construction of the new eight-storey main block is continuing and construction of the Mechanical Lab Complex is complete.The work on the new Mechatronics Laboratary Complex being jointly set up by Mercedes-Benz and GEC,Trivandrum is underway. The faculty members are drawn from the pool of Professors, Assistant Professors and Lecturers under the Department of Technical Education. It is the same pool which provides the faculty to all the nine Government Engineering Colleges in the state. The 50-strong faculty team of the college consists of 7 PhD holders and 28 PG degree holders. The faculty-to-student ratio in GEC Barton Hill is 1:15, which is better than the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) stipulations.

 

Central Library

 

The central library of the college houses 8000 books and periodicals including international journals and magazines. The process of fully computerizing the library, undertaken as a joint venture by the library and the IT department of the college using only free software has been completed. The campus has a subscription to on-line journals from American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and IEEE.
Being centrally placed, the students of the college can also conveniently make use of other libraries in the city such as the University Library, the Public Library and the British Council Library, all of which are a walking distance within a radius of 2 km from the campus.

 

College Hostel

 

Ladies Hostel , a secure home for the female students. This hostel is constructed in an Eco friendly manner to provide a green and fresh breath to its inmates. This is filled with 53 rooms which can accommodate 216 students including both M.Tech & B.Tech students.It provides an attractive shelter to the students, as it is adorned with spacious rooms, proper lighting facilities, study tables and required furnishings. Each of its 4 floors(including base) is lined with long verandas, which gifts you a sweet path due to an open quadrangle located at the center.
 
Besides being a shelter in terms of basic needs such as food, purified water, it provides   extra facilities such as wifi – connectivity, indoor and outdoor game equipment,  resources rich reading corners etc. It has a spacious mess hall which serves tasty and worthy dishes, run by a mess committee headed by the inmates itself. Charge of this mess committee is rounded twice a month so that every student can go through it.

 

College Buses

 

The College has three buses operating in three different routes to cater to the needs of students coming from different parts of Thiruvananthapuram city. The three routes together cover almost all important points within the city. Students can avail College bus facility by taking passes which are valid for one entire semester. Occasional users can travelin the buses by taking tickets costing Rs.10/- per journey. The three different routes of operation are
 
1)    College- Sasthamangalam- Vattiyoorkavu – PTP Nagar – Poojappura – Karamana- Eastfort – Bakery Junction – College
2)    College – Pattom – Kesavadasapuram – Paruthippara – Mannanthala – Peroorkada – Kowdiar – Marappalam – College
3)    CET – Sreekaryam – Ulloor – Medical College =- Kannammoola – Pattor – Palayam – PMG – College
 
The bus operations are coordinated by the Bus Committee of the College. Prof.Ganesh.J,Asst.Professor in Mechanical Engg. is the present Bus Secretary who coordinates the bus operations.

 

Connectivity

 

Three 100 MBPS broadband connect the campus to the web.10 Gbit/s optical fibre network connects the entire campus. Students and faculty are provided access to the internet through protected WiFi network. The college hosts a terminal of the EDUSAT educational communications satellite.

 

Career Guidance and Placement Unit

 

The Career Guidance and Placement Unit (CGPU) of the college is actively organizing many events for the students to get placements in reputed organizations. There are good track records regarding campus placements in the previous years. Organizations like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Accenture, VSNL, HCL, DELL, IBS, Larson and Tubro, Greaves Cotton, Anglo-Eastern Ship Management, Computer Science Corporation, Informatica, Nest, US Technology etc have come to our campus for recruiting students. The organizations specify the academic requirements, and only those candidates having such eligibility will be considered for the selection process. The students are informed about the recruitment programs, and if necessary special coaching programs will be arranged for them to get through the selection process. Trainings on soft skills, group discussions, how to face interview etc. are being conducted on regular basis. Master trainers from outside are also invited to campus for giving training to our students on various skills so as to empower them in attaining goo d placements. Classes are also being arranged for enlightening the students to pursue higher education in India and abroad. Industry experts are also invited to campus for giving exposure on various state-of-the-art technologies. Guidance will also be given to students for choosing best career options. Entrepreneur development programs are also arranged by the unit for the students. A core committee with representatives from pre-final year students of all batches facilitates the activities of the unit.

Industry-Institute Interaction Cell

 

Industry–Institute Interaction Cell is functioning in this college as a forum of interaction between industries and the college, for mutual benefit. A committee consisting of representatives from industry and the faculty is monitoring the activities of the cell. Dr. N.Vijayakumar, Professor, ECE, is the present convener of the cell.
The Departments of the college facilitate an Industrial attachment pro- gramme to give the students a real feel of the work culture. Industrial training is usually carried out in the reputed firms such as kal, brahmos, Cochin Shipyard, Hyundai Motors, Toyota Kirloskar Motors, Travancore Titanium Ltd, keltron, bsnl, aie etc.

 

Intellectual Property Right Cell


The major objectives of the centre are to organize technical programmes to generate awareness among public on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and thus nurturing students research scholars, scientist, technocrats, professionals, industrialists, grass root in- novators, etc. It aims to increase the Intellectual Property output of the State by facilitating and guiding people from different walks of life. The cell will provide technical, legal and financial assistance for filing patent and facilitates to access patent related documents.
