OYO Rooms has been selected by Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council (THSC) to train and certify hospitality staff across India.
"This is a valuable opportunity to drive rapid up-skilling and certification of workers. Our team is very excited about being a part of the 'Skill India' initiative and meaningfully contribute to employment opportunities and upward movement opportunities in the sector," OYO Rooms Founder & CEO Ritesh Agarwal said in a statement.
Ritesh Agarwal is the founder and CEO of OYO. He launched his first startup, Oravel Stays Pvt. Ltd. in 2012. Oravel was designed as a platform for booking budget and premium accommodations. Realizing the great variability in the budget sector, he pivoted Oravel to OYO in 2013 focussed on offering affordable and standardized accommodation. The only Indian to be offered a THIEL fellowship and with heavyweights like Soft bank gunning for him.
OYO Rooms, commonly known as OYO, is an Indian aggregator for standardized inexpensive hotel rooms. It currently operates in more than 170 Indian cities and in Malaysia. OYO started with 1 city and 1 hotel in Gurgaon in May 2013. The company as of November 2015 has 15,000+ hotels (more than 10,00,000 rooms) in 250 + cities of India,and has been named India's largest budget hotel chain.It has also launched in Malaysia
OYO Rooms and THSC will sign an MoU to this effect on November 26, the company said.
THSC is assigned with the task of skilling India in the Tourism and Hospitality sector under the government's skill development programme across country.
Commenting on the partnership, THSC Chief Executive Officer Praveen Roy said: "The hospitality sector is grappling with manpower and talent crunch to meet the surge of upcoming demand, and faces a huge training vacuum. THSC encourages a progression path which is supported by tenure, calibre and on-the-job skilling, besides just formal education."
OYO Rooms' scale of network and depth of partner engagements will encourage more people working in the unorganized sector to participate in this exercise, he added.
