Stella Nina McCartney is an English fashion designer, who runs her own brand called ‘Stella McCartney’. She operates 17 freestanding stores in various locations including Manhattan’s Soho, London’s Mayfair, LA’s West Hollywood, Paris’ Palais Royal, Barcelona's Passeig de Gracia and Milan, and recently opened in Rome and Miami. One of the most renowned fashion designers in the world, McCartney was born in a household that was already endowed with money and fame; her father Sir Paul McCartney is a former bassist with the famous band ‘Beatles’ and her mother was a famous photographer. Even though her family was affluent, she was raised in the humble surroundings of English countryside. She was interested in designing clothes since a very young age and designed her first apparel at the age of 13. McCartney gained momentum in her fashion career when ‘Chole’ selected her as its Creative Director. Thereafter, she gained commercial and critical success and started her own brand in the early 2000s. She is the kind of designer who does not only want to be famous amongst the affluent but also wants to reach to the general public, which is why she has been in collaboration with the more affordable brands like ‘H&M’, ‘Adidas’, etc. McCartney is a person with principles and is against the use of animal skin in fashion and is a strong supporter of PETA.

 

Childhood & Early Life

  • Stella McCartney was born on September 13, 1971 in Lambeth, London, to Sir Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney. Her father is the former member of the famous band called ‘Beatles’ and her mother was an American photographer.
  • McCartney belonged to a very wealthy background and received an affluent upbringing. Most of her childhood was spent travelling around the world with her parents, siblings and half-siblings.
  • Although she belonged to a rich family, she was still sent to the local state schools in East Sussex. Later, she attended Central St. Martins College of Art & Design.

 

Career

  • In 1995, McCartney ventured into the world of fashion with her first collection of feminine, curt and in-vogue collection. She asked supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss to model her collection at her graduation.
  • Her show became very famous with the media and was covered by every major English newspaper. All of her collection was sold to ‘Tokio’—a London boutique. Her designs were licensed to brands like, ‘Browns’, ‘Neiman Marcus’, ‘Joseph’, etc.
  • Two years after her graduation from London’s Central St. Martins College of Art & Design, McCartney was invited to become the head designer at the fashion house ‘Chloe’ in Paris, France.
  • Karl Lagerfeld, the famous German designer, was at first very skeptical of McCartney’s talent in fashion and criticized ‘Chloe’s’ decision to pick her as its creative director but with time, she gained more and more commercial and critical success at the fashion house.
  • In 2001, time was ripe for McCartney to launch her own fashion house and she founded one and displayed her very first collection in Paris. She is now the owner of 17 stores of her brand located all over the world.
  • McCartney launched her first perfume, ‘Stella’, few years after launching her brand and in 2004, her joint venture line with Adidas was launched. It consists of sports performance collection for women.
  • In 2004 itself, she designed clothes for the pop queen, Madonna, for her Tour. She also designed for singer Annie Lennox’s summer tour and Jude Law’s and Gwyneth Paltrow’s costumes for ‘Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow’.
  • In 2005, in order to gain more popularity amongst general public and create affordable designs, she launched a range of clothing and accessories for ‘H&M’. She also launched her limited edition for 100 targeted stores in Australia.
  • In 2007, she widened her scope in the fashion market and entered into cosmetics by launching a skincare line, ‘CARE’. It is an exclusive organic line that consists of seven selected products. In the following year, she launched her lingerie line.
  • McCartney announced in 2010 that she would be teaming up with ‘Disney’ to come up with an ‘Alice in Wonderland’- inspired jewelry collection. She was also appointed as the Team Great Britain’s Creative Director for 2012 Olympics by Adidas.

  • McCartney’s most prominent work is considered to be her collaborations and tie-ups that she ventured into to make her brand more accessible to people, like, her collaboration with ‘H&M’, ‘Adidas’ and working as Team GB’s Creative Director for the 2012 Olympics.

 

Awards & Achievements
  • McCartney’s fashion accolades includes: VH1/Vogue Designer of the Year (2000), Glamour Award (2004), Organic Style Woman of the Year Award (2005), Elle Style Award (2007), etc. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (2013).

     

Personal Life & Legacy

  • McCartney married British publisher Alasdhair Willis in 2003. The couple has four children together: Miller Alasdhair James Willis, Beckett Robert Lee Willis, Bailey Linda Olwyn Willis and Reiley Dilys Stella Willis.

     

Trivia

  • The wedding dress that McCartney wore on her wedding day was an upgrade version of her late mother’s wedding dress.
  • Her half sister was born in 2003 to her father, Paul McCartney, and his second wife Heather Mills.
  • She participated at the catwalk of ‘The Brandery’ fashion show in Barcelona in 2011.
  • She designed Madonna's wedding dress for her marriage to Guy Ritchie in 2003.
  • While criticizing McCartney’s selection in ‘Chole’ as the Creative Director, Karl Lagerfeld publically made a statement that, "Chloe should have taken a big name. They did, but in music, not fashion. Let's hope she's as gifted as her father."
  • McCartney is a vegetarian and does not use any leather or fur in her designs. She supports PETA.
