JOB DESCRIPTION 1
The tasks a Points Man, Railway is expected to perform include:
  • Operating the hand points for setting the railway lines as per the instructions of the Points Worker or Station Master in the non-interlock and non-signal lines for shunting and the arrival and departure of the trains
  • Setting the points as per the instructions from the Station Master or Points Worker
  • Locking the facing-points in the non-interlock yards or non-signal lines for safeguarding against derailment of the train
  • Signalling the train with a hand flag or light to proceed in the right direction
  • Ensuring that the connecting lines are clear of any obstructions and that the brake of the stationary train is away from the fowling mark
  • Coupling and uncoupling the waggons and coaches during the shunting of trains

  • It needs one to be on their toes
  • Need not handle a team
  • Local travelling is not a part of this job role
  • Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities
  • Work from home option is not available
Working hours
  • Working hours are 8 hours everyday for 6 days a week
