Role Overview

Trade Apprentices at MDL are selected across various technical trades to receive hands-on training in the shipbuilding and repair processes. They work under the Apprentices Act, 1961, gaining practical experience while contributing to core shop-floor operations 

 Key Trades & Eligibility

Main trades offered include:

  • Group A (10th pass): Draftsman (Mechanical), Electrician, Fitter, Pipe Fitter, Structural Fitter

  • Group B (ITI pass): Fitter Structural, Draftsman (Mechanical), Electrician, ICTSM, Electronic Mechanic, RAC, Pipe Fitter, Welder, COPA, Carpenter

  • Group C (8th pass): Rigger, Welder (Gas & Electric) 

Age limits vary by group:

  • Group A: 15–19 years

  • Group B: 16–21 years

  • Group C: 14–18 years 

 Responsibilities

Though the official MDL notice doesn't list specific duties, typical apprentice roles (derived from standard industry practice) include:

  • Hands-on training under experienced supervisors in your trade (e.g., welding, fitting, electrical work).

  • Assisting skilled tradespeople in manufacturing, assembly, maintenance, and repair tasks.

  • Following detailed drawings and technical instructions to support production accuracy.

  • Maintaining workplace safety, cleanliness, and compliance with quality standards.

  • Participating in training/workshop sessions, theoretical learning, and assessments as part of the apprenticeship program 


 Learning & Development

  • Rotate through various shipyard departments to understand overall operations.

  • Attend structured classes and practical sessions to build both technical and soft skills.

  • Prepare for assessments and trade-tests, leading to certification under the Apprentices Act.
