 Core Duties & Responsibilities

1. Investigative Authority & Law Enforcement

  • Case Investigation & Charge-Sheeting: As the first-ranking officer authorized to file charge sheets in court, SIs typically serve as the first investigating officer (FIO) in criminal cases 

  • Crime Detection & Patrols: Leading criminal investigations, gathering evidence, conducting searches, collecting witness statements, and organizing patrols in assigned beats.

2. Station House Officer (SHO)

  • If posted in rural areas or smaller stations, an SI may act as Station House Officer, overseeing day-to-day station operations, managing constables, and maintaining law and order .

3. Charge of Police Outposts ("Chowkies")

  • In smaller police outposts, SIs often superintend operations, handle minor criminal complaints, local disputes, and maintain good community law enforcement 

4. Supervision & Command

  • Reporting chain: SI is positioned above Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) and constables and reports to Inspectors or DSPs. They may also lead squads in crime-sensitive situations 

 Administrative & Operational Duties

5. Record-Keeping & Reporting

  • Maintaining comprehensive general diaries, case files, arrest registers, charge-sheet documents, and logs of station activity and resources.

  • Preparing periodic reports for sub-divisional/district headquarters.

6. Public Order, Licenses & Traffic

  • Enforcing local laws, responding to public complaints or disturbances.

  • May be involved in processing license applications (e.g., arms, movement restrictions under CrPC Sec.144) in coordination with licensing authorities.

7. Judicial Duties

  • Court Appearances: Presenting case files and evidence before the judicial magistrate and prosecution of cases.

Specialized Functions & Coordination

8. Duties in Reserve or Technical Units

  • In roles such as Reserve SI, Motor Transport SI, or Telecommunications SI, responsibilities include arms/ammunition custody, vehicle workshops, tear-gas deployment, log maintenance, and technical operations within the police force 

9. Emergency Response & Coordination

  • Coordinating reserve forces during communal or law-and-order situations.

  • Collaborating with senior officials, such as DSPs, during emergencies and escalation.

10. Community Engagement

  • Engaging with local communities, handling local conflicts, gathering intelligence, and overseeing community-centric policing initiatives.
