IAF Commissioned Officer – Flying Branch (2025): Job Role and Responsibilities

Job Role:

As a Commissioned Officer in the Flying Branch, you will operate and command aircraft (fighter jets, transport aircraft, or helicopters) and perform both peacetime and wartime flying missions. You will serve as a frontline defender of Indian airspace and may also undertake humanitarian and strategic missions.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Aircraft Operation:
    • Fly and navigate aircraft in both combat and non-combat roles.
    • Undertake missions such as air defence, strike, reconnaissance, transport, or rescue operations.
  2. Combat Readiness:
    • Maintain top physical and mental fitness to meet the demands of aerial warfare.
    • Undergo continuous training in aerial tactics and dogfighting techniques.
  3. Mission Planning & Execution:
    • Plan, brief, and execute tactical or strategic air operations.
    • Analyze mission data, weather, and intelligence to determine flight plans.
  4. Aircraft Safety and Maintenance Oversight:
    • Monitor aircraft systems and ensure operational safety during flight.
    • Coordinate with ground staff for aircraft servicing, refueling, and maintenance.
  5. Team Leadership:
    • Lead aircrew and coordinate with other branches (technical, logistics, administration) for successful mission execution.
    • Train and mentor junior officers and pilots.
  6. Surveillance and Reconnaissance:
    • Carry out air patrols and reconnaissance missions over land or sea to gather intelligence.
  7. Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief:
    • Participate in rescue operations, airlifting civilians, and providing aid in disaster-hit areas.
  8. Participation in Joint Exercises:

Job Role and Responsibilities

As a Commissioned Officer in the Ground Duty (Technical) Branch, you are responsible for ensuring the airworthiness, maintenance, and operational readiness of aircraft and aviation equipment. You handle advanced technologies, maintain weapon systems, and manage aerospace engineering support across bases.

 Key Responsibilities:

1. Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Supervision

  • Oversee inspection, servicing, repair, and testing of aircraft and weapon systems.
  • Ensure aircraft meet technical standards for flight safety and performance.
  • Coordinate with ground crew to maintain mission-ready status.

2. Technical Management and Support

  • Supervise the operation and maintenance of high-tech ground systems such as:
    • Radars
    • Communication networks
    • Missile systems
  • Maintain technical documentation and aircraft logbooks.

3. Aeronautical Engineering Specializations

Depending on your stream, you may be assigned to:

  • Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical): Focuses on propulsion, airframes, engines, and hydraulics.
  • Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics): Handles avionics, sensors, radar, and weapon control systems.

4. Project Implementation

  • Support induction and integration of new technologies, aircraft, and systems into IAF operations.

1. Administration Branch

2. Logistics Branch
