Role & Responsibilities
1. Detect & Investigate Irregularities
-
Vigilance Inspectors conduct preventive checks on tenders, contracts, stores, and other departments to uncover fraud, corruption, and compliance lapses

They register and investigate offenses under the Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act of 1966 and the Indian Railway Act, collecting evidence and preparing case files
2. Conduct Surveillance & Patrols
-
Regular surveillance of vulnerable areas such as workshops, depots, trains, and freight yards.

Setting up surprise checks, patrolling sensitive sites, escorting trains, and monitoring black‑spots to reduce theft and pilferage
3. Collect Intelligence
-
Gather intelligence on ongoing or planned offenses—like sabotage, misappropriation, and other threats to railway property or operations—and report it for action
4. Coordinate with Other Agencies
-
Liaise closely with Government Railway Police (GRP), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and other enforcement bodies to support criminal investigations and law enforcement actions
5. Maintain Legal & Procedural Compliance
-
Ensure strict adherence to Railway procurement rules (e.g., tenders/contracts), with processes aligned to the Central Vigilance Commission’s guidelines.

Proper documentation in DAR (Departmental Action Rule) inquiries and ensuring confidentiality and record management
6. Custody & Legal Proceedings

Manage the proper handling of arrested individuals, ensuring their well-being during custody, and prepare legal case materials for prosecution or departmental hearings
7. Support Preventive & Corrective Measures
-
Analyze trends in misconduct, sabotage, or system failures and recommend improvements in security measures, operational protocols, or infrastructure gaps
8. Reporting & Training
-
Compile regular vigilance status reports for officials and departments.

Participate in and sometimes conduct training programs for Vigilance officers, including staff of various departments
