Role & Responsibilities

As an ACIO-II (Executive) in the Intelligence Bureau, you will be a Group C (non-gazetted) officer involved in a blend of field and office operations:

  • Intelligence Collection: Gather sensitive human intelligence, conduct surveillance, and scan open-source info to identify internal security threats 

  • Threat & Counter‑Intel Analysis: Analyze data to detect patterns or espionage threats, and assess risks to national security

  • Report Writing: Prepare concise, actionable reports and briefs for senior officers 

  • Surveillance & Fieldwork: Carry out covert operations, deploy surveillance techniques, and support crisis response when needed 

  • Inter-Agency Coordination: Work with police, border security, and other intelligence units to share findings and coordinate actions 

  • Crisis Management: Serve in active security scenarios—terror threats, major incidents—and assist in rapid response efforts 

  • Maintain Confidentiality: Handle classified information ethically and securely at all times 

 Training & Posting

  • Intensive Training: Approx. 180 days in training phases, covering surveillance, cyber intelligence, legal frameworks, and on‑job field exposure 

  • All‑India Service Liability: Postings can be anywhere—urban, rural, border zones—often with frequent movement during initial years 

  • Probation: Typically a 2‑year probation, during which performance, adaptability, and conduct are closely monitored 

 Career Growth & Promotion Path

Promotions in IB are pegged to both tenure and performance:

  1. ACIO‑II (Executive) – entry-level post.

  2. ACIO‑I – after ~3–4 years. Takes on leadership roles and strategic planning 

  3. Deputy Central Intelligence Officer (DCIO) – after ~10 years. Oversees major operations and policy coordination 

  4. Assistant Director and Beyond – senior roles (Assistant Director, Joint Deputy Director) after ~25–30 years 

₹ Pay & Benefits

  • Basic Pay: ₹44,900; Pay Level 7 under 7th Pay Commission 

  • Allowances: Includes Dearness Allowance (~46%), Special Security Allowance (~20%), HRA (9–27% depending on city), transport, NPS contributions, etc. 

  • In-hand Salary: Estimated ₹44,000–48,000/month early on, varies with posting and allowances

  • Other Benefits: Health insurance, government housing or allowance, pension, leave entitlements
