Indian Coast Guard Recruitment 2025 Age Limit (as on 01-07-2026)

  • General Duty (GD): 21-25 years
  • Technical (Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics): 21-25 years

Qualification

General Duty (GD): 

  • Should hold a Graduate Degree from a recognised university.
  • Mathematics and Physics as subject upto Intermediate or class XII of 10+2+3 scheme of education or equivalent.
  • The candidates who have completed graduation after diploma, are also eligible, provided they should possess a diploma with physics and mathematics in its curriculum.

Technical (Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics)

  • Should hold an Engineering degree from a recognized university in Naval Architecture or Mechanical or Marine or Automotive or Mechatronics or Industrial and Production or Metallurgy or Design or Aeronautical or Aerospace.
  • Equivalent qualification in any of the above disciplines recognised by the Institutes of the Engineers (India) as exempted from section „A‟ and „B‟ and their associate membership examination (AMIE)
  • Should hold an Engineering degree from a recognized university in Electrical or Electronics or Telecommunication or Instrumentation or Instrumentation and Control or Electronics and Communication or Power Engineering or Power Electronics
  • Equivalent qualification in any of the above disciplines recognised by the Institutes of the Engineers (India) as exempted from section „A‟ and „B‟ and their associate membership examination (AMIE).
  • Mathematics and Physics as subject upto intermediate or class XII of 10+2+3 scheme of education or equivalent. The candidates who have completed graduation after diploma, are also eligible, provided they should possess an diploma with physics and mathematics in its curriculum.

Salary

The promotions to the ranks will be as per the laid down promotion criteria. The pay scales for the various ranks as per the 7th CPC are as follows:-

  • Assistant Commandant: 56,100/-
  • Deputy Commandant: 67,700/-
  • Commandant (JG): 78,800/-
  • Commandant: 1,23,100/-
  • Deputy Inspector General: 1,31,100/-
  • Inspector General: 1,44,200/-
  • Additional Director General: 1,82,200/-
  • Director General: 2,05,400/

Role & Responsibilities

As an Assistant Commandant, you will serve as a junior Gazetted officer responsible for critical maritime duties, including 

  1. Operational Leadership

    • Command ships, aircraft, or coastal units.

    • Plan and execute maritime operations (patrols, anti-smuggling, pollution control, anti-piracy).

  2. Maritime Security & Law Enforcement

    • Patrol and surveil India's coastal and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

    • Intercept illegal vessels, monitor fishing activity, and enforce coastal regulations.

  3. Search & Rescue (SAR)

    • Lead SAR missions in maritime distress conditions.

    • Coordinate multi-agency responses and deliver medical aid when required.

  4. Administration & Resource Management

    • Oversee personnel, equipment, and unit readiness.

    • Ensure compliance with Coast Guard protocols and maintain operational preparedness.

  5. Training & Development

    • Train junior officers through drills and exercises.

    • Mentor teams and continuously upgrade technical/professional skills.

Additionally, there are branch-specific tasks:

  • General Duty (GD) officers handle maritime operations, navigation, and airborne surveillance 

  • Technical officers manage engineering systems, sensors, and maintenance aboard vessels and at maritime installations .

 Rank & Pay Scale

  • Rank: Assistant Commandant is the entry-level Group ‘A’ officer rank in the ICG, equivalent to an Army Captain or CAPF DSP 

  • Pay: Basic pay of ₹56,100 (Pay Level-10), with benefits including Dearness Allowance (DA), HRA, MSP, TA, medical, housing, retirement benefits, and more 

 Career Progression

Promotion pathway within the ICG typically follows:

  • Deputy Commandant (~after 5 years),

  • Commandant (Junior Grade), then

  • Commandant, DIG, IG, and up to Director General with increasing years of service
