Qualification

• For trades of Constable (Carpenter), Constable (Plumber), Constable (Painter), Constable (Electrician), Constable (Pump Operator) and Constable (Upholsterer):
• Matriculation or equivalent from a recognized Board;
• Two years certificate course from Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in the trade or a similar trade; or
• One year certificate course from Industrial Training Institute (ITI) or Government-affiliated Vocational Institute with at least one year experience in the trade;
• For trades of Constable (Cobbler), Constable (Tailor), Constable (Washerman). Constable (Barber), Constable (Sweeper) and Constable (Khoji/Syce):
• Matriculation or equivalent from a recognized Board;

Salary

• Pay Matrix Level-3, Pay Scale Rs. 21,700-69,100/-and other allowances as admissible to Central Govt. employees from time to time.

Job Roles and Duties – Constable (Tradesman)

Tradesman positions in BSF (Group‑C) are support roles for essential services such as:

• Cobbler – repairing, stitching, polishing footwear

• Tailor – measuring, cutting, stitching uniforms/clothing

• Barber – haircutting, shaving, basic grooming

• Washerman – laundering and ironing uniforms

• Sweeper – sanitation and cleaning facilities

• Cook – food preparation (requires NSQF Level I certification)

• Water Carrier, Waiter, and similar roles

Trade‑specific skills are required: most roles require proficiency in a specific trade plus a trade‑test for practical competence. For cook, waiter, and water‑carrier roles, NSQF Level‑I certification (e.g. food production or kitchen) is mandatory

• Salary: Pay Matrix Level‑3: ₹21,700 – ₹69,100 per month, plus allowances according to 7th CPC

 Selection Process

Typically consists of the following stages:

1. Physical Standards Test (PST) – height, chest (for males), other measurements.

2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET) – race (men usually 5 km, women 1.6 km) within specified times.

3. Trade Test – practical assessment for applicable trades (qualifying nature) for tradesman roles 

4. Written Examination (CBT/OMR) – 100 marks, usually 25 questions each on Math, Reasoning, General Knowledge, Hindi/English. Passing thresholds vary by category (~35% for UR/EWS, 33% for SC/ST/OBC)
