Air Conditioning Technicians work with refrigerants and other chemicals and use a variety of trade skills to assemble air conditioning units. They can work for air conditioning and refrigeration companies or be self-employed.
How to become an Air Conditioning Technician
You need to complete a trade qualification to work as an Air Conditioning Technician. This is typically the Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (UEE32220), which can be completed as part of an apprenticeship. Licences are required to perform certain job activities.
- Complete a Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (UEE32220) as part of an apprenticeship. This usually takes three to four years including a mixture of theoretical learning and on-the-job training.
- Apply for a Refrigerant Handling Licence (RHL) via the Australian Refrigeration Council.
- Get your construction induction card (white card) by completing a short course through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
- Consider completing additional qualifications to further improve your career options. This could be a Certificate IV in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems (UEE42920) or Diploma of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering (UEE51220).
