At the end of this year's joint counselling for IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes, only 73 vacancies are left in IITs, bulk of them (38) in IIT-BHU.
73 seats in the various Indian Institute of Technology has been left vacant this year, after the six rounds of counseling. Of the total 9660 seats in various engineering streams across the country in IITs, 73 seats (0.76%) could not find any takers even after the sixth round of counseling.
The number is lesser than the vacant seats last year, which were 341. Last year, the IIT had conducted only two counseling rounds, while this year they increased it to six to fill all the seats.
Many thought that the new IITs would not be able to draw many students and would majorly go unclaimed. But on the contrary, IIT Varanasi, which is one of the older IIT institutes have seen 38 vacant seats out of the 1090 seats. The premiere IIT institute in Kharagpur has seven vacant seats at the moment and in the newer IITs such as IIT-Palakkar and Jammu, there are five seats left vacant each.
The vacant seats in premiere engineering institute like IITs is caused majorly due to the fact that once the students do not get the IIT institute of their choice, they tend to go for engineering colleges close to their home. This provides them the required mobility to carry forward their studies with the comfort of their home.
While there were seats left in some of the IITs, most of the IITs did not have any seats left for the session. IIT Kanpur, Mandi, Hyderabad, Goa, Delhi and Bombay are the institutes, which doesn’t have any seat left in any particular engineering stream.
This year, the JEE Advance Council has allowed the students to cancel their admissions and get back the fee submitted for the same. It has resulted in students pulling out from the institute even after getting admission, which then get allotted to new applicants. At the end of round five, 293 students withdrew their seats, out of which 201 took admission till 20 July, 2016.
