Cosmetology is the study and application of Beauty Treatment. Cosmetology includes everything Beautifying everything from Head to Toe which includes Nails, Legs, Arms, Face, Hair etc. This Field is also known as Beauty Care. Cosmetologists are Beauty Specialist who utilise the knowledge and the use of a range of treatments and equipments to enhance the appearance of the Face, Body and Hair. A typical Cosmetologist will perform various functions like Cutting Hair, Trimming Hair, Give Massage, Cleaning, Shaping and Polishing Fingernails, Toenails etc. depending upon his/her Specialisation. Cosmetologists can be Medical Professionals and Non-Medical Professionals as well. Though mostly a Field of Beauty Care, Cosmetology also includes certain elements of Naturopathy for maintaining a healthy body and a stress free mind.

Basic Requirement

Non-Medical Cosmetologist don't require any Professional Qualifications as such. But to be Cosmetologist one shouldn't be less than 16 years of age, according to the Law. One can enter this Field after completing schooling by enrolling for a Short-Term Diploma and Certificate Courses in Beauty and Hair Care. Some of these Courses are available after 10th and some are offered for 10+2 pass students in any stream. To become a good Beautician one requires Practical Skills which can be gained not only by Professional Training but also with a great deal of Hands-On Practice. To be a Medical Cosmetologist or Cosmetic Dermatologist one needs to have a Post graduate Degree in Dermatology (MD or diploma/DNB) after MBBS.

Remuneration

The Pay Scale varies, largely due the size and reputation of the business one works for. One starting out with Beauty Parlours can take home any thing from Rs. 3,000 to 10,000 per month. But as one become more experienced and starts getting recognition one can become Successful and Popular too. A Make-Up Artist may charge anywhere from Rs. 500 to Rs. 4,000 to do a Bridal or Photographic Make-Up. During Season the Pay Scale may increases two fold. In Modelling Assignments, the Pay Scale is around Rs 3,500 or more per day depending on the top-line-professionals.
