Hair stylists use a range of techniques to provide clients with the desired colour, texture and shape that they want for their hair. Hair stylists are an important part of the health and beauty industry, as they are responsible for cutting and styling clients' hair. They are highly skilled in their ability to handle hair, and also have an extensive knowledge of the appropriate products for different hair types.

Being a hair stylist is not a profession dominated by men or women. Most hair stylists work in salons, where they will spend most of their working day on their feet, moving around the salon as they wash, dry and style clients' hair in different areas.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Though there is no specific eligibility criteria required for entering this field, it does require professional expertise and also a great deal of practical training to gain expertise in this offbeat career. The basic qualification needed for hairdressing are good communication and negotiation skills, backed by training with a renowned salon.

There are several training schools for beauty and hair care courses. Most of them prefer a 10/+2 or at least a class10 level qualification. For an advanced career in the field, Hair stylist professionals require some formal education.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Hair stylists must complete many diverse tasks and always need to be friendly and professional with customers. Key skills and qualities include:

  • Good teamwork.
  • Maintaining a tactful, friendly manner.
  • Communication skills.
  • Openness to learning new ideas and techniques.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Cleanliness and good personal grooming.

JOB MARKET

The BLS states that employment opportunities for hairdressers, hair stylists and cosmetologists were expected to increase 10 percent from 2014-2024, which was faster than the average rate for all occupations.

Backed by annual growth rate of 40 percent, the Indian hairstyling industry offers dozens of career opportunities for aspirants entering into this field. One can find employment in the following major areas of work in a salon/ beauty parlor/cosmetics manufacturing company/ health club or in television and film industry. Also while a graduate with a formal training can join the industry as beauty consultants one always has the option of being in-house employee for fashion houses, magazines and photo shoots.

A great scope of self-employment is also there after gaining reasonable experience. If you market yourself well and offer latest services and trends in hairstyling then sky is the limit for you. Many renowned hairstylists have written their own success stories this way.
